Interview With a Designer: Homer Gaines
It’s been a while since I’ve done an podcast interview. Since I had loads of questions about web design, I asked Homer Gaines if he would mind answering some questions. Look within to see what we talked about.

I read an article that, as a consumer, rubbed me the wrong way. It is sad how many people simply do not understand how to work with others. Trying to force someone, or giving them an ultimatum, isn’t the way to go. Instead, learn from past experiences and show you have wisdom.
I’m asked often what I’ve been up to lately. A lot has changed. I thought I’d share.
When you leave your house, do you leave the windows open and doors unlocked? Why not? No one would know unless they tried to get in if they were truly open, right? When you park your car, do you leave it unlocked? Why not? No one would know unless they tried to break in, and what are the odds of that? When you leave the house, do you check into a geolocation based service to announce where you are? Why not? What are the odds of something bad happening, right? See the twisted logic? Let’s talk about some solutions to the security and privacy issues surrounding these services so everyone can have fun.
Part of doing business online is making sure you are in a position of strength. Especially in the event things do not work out as planned. Yesterday, b5media let their entertainment writers go. Imagine their shock when they read their email to find they were let go and were locked out of the sites. What happened?
In the last article I spoke making mistakes and moving past those mistakes. In this article, I go into more detail explaining why people usually fail when trying to recover from their mistakes and the key to truly overcoming bad times due to bad decisions being made.
Success is a beautiful thing but sometimes, it comes before the person receiving the success is ready to handle it. That is what happened, in my opinion, to Daniel Brusilovsky. A 17 year old writer who tried to receive a Macbook Air (compensation) in exchange for writing an article. Daniel crossed the line. How can he recover?
Do people who make more pay more for goods and services? Of course they do. In some situations, this works and is the only way for companies to sustain themselves. Online companies usually do not have this excuse. Rarely do online companies have overhead that need to be increased based on income and rarely does the company owner have the knowledge of how much the consumer makes. Scaling prices based on income can fall flat online.
I read an article about a guy getting his Mom an iPad. His motives for getting an iPad rubbed me the wrong way. He wants to escape the “oppressive chains” of being the one in the family that can fix computers. This led me to think about disloyalty, lack of appreciation, how selfish people can become and (when asking people their thoughts on the article), how easy it can be to hurt someone unintentionally online.
